Those dark streaks on Lowcountry roofs are usually algae, not dirt. Roofs should never be cleaned with high pressure — the safe method is a low-pressure soft wash that treats the growth directly.
Roof algae (often Gleocapsa magma) thrives in humid coastal climates and shows up as black streaks, especially on shaded, north-facing slopes. Blasting a roof with a pressure washer can dislodge granules and shorten shingle life, so we never do that.
Instead, we use a soft wash: low pressure and cleaning solutions that break down algae, moss, and lichen. This lifts the staining while protecting the roofing material and the surfaces below.
We take extra care with runoff, pre-wetting and rinsing landscaping and protecting gutters and downspouts throughout the process.
